Backcountry CO

A hunting and backcountry map for Colorado

Every public layer that matters in Colorado, on one map, with or without a signal.

Backcountry CO is a small, private iOS app built for a family of Colorado hunters. It shows who owns and manages the land, whether you may enter it, where the unit boundaries run, and where the water is, then lets you record what you find.

Backcountry CO is currently in a private beta via TestFlight. It is not available on the App Store.

Land and access

BLM, Forest Service, state and local land tinted by manager, with public access status from USGS PAD-US. Private parcels with owner names, adjoining same-owner parcels merged into one holding.

Hunting units

Big game, bighorn and mountain goat GMUs from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, with data analysis units, State Wildlife Areas and Walk-In Access properties.

Roads, trails, water

Forest Service MVUM roads and seasonal closures, COTREX trails with open dates, trailheads, and USGS springs and wells.

Species activity

CPW winter and summer ranges, concentration areas, calving areas and migration corridors for elk, deer, moose, pronghorn, bear, lion and more.

Offline maps

Download any unit by its exact boundary, including satellite, topo, terrain and all overlays, and use it with no cell service.

Pins, notes, tracks

Drop pins, attach notes and photos, record GPS tracks, import GPX from a Garmin, and measure distance and area with two fingers. Everything syncs between your own devices.

Conditions

Active wildfire perimeters, fire history, precipitation radar and a point forecast for any spot on the map.

Public data only

Everything on the map comes from public sources: CPW, BLM, USFS, USGS, Colorado OIT parcels, NIFC and OpenStreetMap. Credits are listed in the app.
